Ka Bel

Ka Bel was a well-known labor leader and a staunch critic of Arroyo’s Administration. His imprisonment in 2006 and 2007 on disputed charges of rebellion and sedition drew international attention. As a member of 13th Congress of the Philippines with the Anakpawis or the 'Toiling Masses Partylist' and former chair of Kilusang Mayo Uno (KMU), a militant and progressive labor movement. The work of Bienvenido Lumbera’s Ka Bel became an eye opener in the real scenario that is happening now in our society. The proletariat are not well treated in our society, especially by some greedy capitalist who gain much power to suffer the working-class citizens.

The Kawit Shooting Reportage

Image
From the reportage that we have read "The House on Zapote Street by Quijano de Manila" was all about a crime of jealousy and possessiveness of the perpetrator. Our teacher in the 21st Century Literature asked us to do an activity which was to make a reportage about the most notorious crimes. Our group decided to make a reportage about the Kawit Cavite mass shooting incident. Happened on January 4, 2013 around nine in the morning in Brgy. Tabon 1 in Kawit, Cavite. Seven people, including two children and pregnant women, were killed when a man named Ronald Bae who has believed to be under the influence of drugs and alcohol. Dominic Calavia and Marielle Griarte acted as the reporter and the news anchor and Clyde Rebinito acted ...

Liebeslied: A Short Story

LIEBISLIED---The ringing of the bells can be heard throughout the cathedral; anxiety rushing its course through her veins, unspeakable joy is all she could feel. As Alysson draws near the dark oak doors and as her father holds onto her hand, her body sways as the piano plays; she couldn't help but let the salty sweet tears fall down her cheeks.             The happiness she feels beams throughout Kevin's face, looking into his green orbs reminiscing about their past. Alysson didn't think of ending here in a church yet she's grateful to have met someone like Kevin. In front of the altar she awaits, in front of the priest preceding. As he preaches the verse she reads, about love and everything in between. The droplets from her eyes refuse to stop rolling down, as Kevin announces his vows. The same words of love she received from him, at the park that saw it all. The night he knelled before her, the night he confessed his love for ...

The Plant In Our Home                 Calamansi (Citrofortunella microcarpa /Citrofortunella mitis) is a round and small citrus fruit that is commonly used here in the Philippines for culinary and herbal uses. Calamansi is commonly used in the filipino cuisine as a condiment like in pancit, lugaw, or even in the sawsawan. When comes to the health benefits of the calamansi, it is very rich in vitamin C that is good in our health. One of the benefits of calamansi in our health is it can protect us from common colds and flu. That is why it is traditionally used as a treatment for certain diseases. And this is the reason why I choose this fruit as my plant in my project in the 21st Century Literature.                  In the short story, Gulayan Klasrum, we the students are encouraged to apply what we have learned in the story. We are encouraged to be a nature lovers by showing awareness ...

Creative Writing: Imagery

I love to go to the beach when I feel lonely. The beach is alive with the dancing of the trees and the sound of the waters as they roll against the sand. The radiance of the setting sun gives me a splendid comfort. The birds flying through the horizon are chirping as if they like to greet me. Children like to swim as if they were like dolphins. The grown-ups love to play beachball at the edge of the water. The vivacious beach gives me a remedy for my loneliness. I like to go to the beach as much as I want to.

Vita Sine Litteris Mors Est

Image
Life without literature is death. Literature cannot be separated from our everyday life. Literature is vital in the life of a person. We see literature in our everyday life, and sometimes ignore it. Literature is everywhere. We can see literature from books like novels, comic books, mangas, and graphic novels. Also the books like encyclopedias, almanacs, yearbooks, dictionaries, atlases, and even textbooks and instructional manuals are all literature. Even the song we sing in the karaoke is a literature. Literature can be seen in our religious practices like the bible, prayers, and even the holy mass is a literature. One cannot deny the fact that we are with literature from our birth to our death.       We now understand that literature is everywhere. But there is a problem with literature. According to Mo Yan, one of the biggest problems in literature i...

Visita Iglesia 2017

Image
Last March 18, 2017 we went on a pilgrimage at the provinces of Tarlac and Pampanga. The pilgrimage was organized by our fellow bro., Cip Guarin. The pilgrimage started at 4:30 am. The first church we reached was the San Rafael Archangel parish. For our first stop in the pilgrimage, a mass was celebrated in the church, presided by our assistant priest Fr. Roy Borrega. After the mass, we prayed the first two stations of the cross. The Stations of the Cross is composed of 14 stations and were divided into the seven pilgrim churches. This is also called as “Visita Iglesia”. The second pilgrim church in the list was the Our Lady of Grace parish church at Mabalacat, Pampanga. The church is big and has a beautiful altar and interior. The next church is the Our Lady of Sorrows parish church. It is situated along the national road. The parish is not quite  small but its interior makes it a beautiful church. The fourth church on the list is the Sto. Cristo parish church. The chu...
