Critique Paper
In “Every day with My Morrie,”
Priscilla M. Agaton wrote an essay for the loss of her colleague and friend, Lolita
Lopez Cabangbang, her Morrie in life. She talked about her
grief, pain and mourning about her Morrie, who passed away last 2007 due to
breast cancer. The writer used the book of Mitch Albom’s “Tuesdays with my
Morrie,” to describe her Morrie who occupied a special place in her heart. The
writer’s emotion is somewhat sympathetic about the loss of her Morrie, who is
an exemplar of a of passionate teacher. In addition, the writer talked about
her self-reflection about the loss of her Morrie and how she was deeply
affected by it. The writer also talked about the reason of the death of her
Morrie and what is the reason of why she chose to compare her friend from a
real person named Morrie.
I
can say that the writer’s audience are the people who read the essay. I believe
that everyone of us has their own experiences about their friends and I can say
that some of us has this friend like Morrie, a person who is passionate in
teaching and who values education. The writer described her Morrie as a strong
woman, despite of her illness she continued her life in teaching. The writer of
the essay connects her life with her friend to the book (memoir) of Mitch
Albom. The book examines the interactions and phenomena between the human
experience of living and dying. It is a theme of personal transcendence that
appears for both characters: Morrie and Albom. The transformation was experienced
by both characters in the book, through the deteriorating health of Morrie. In
the book, Morrie shows the value of retaining dignity in the face of death;
that love is the most valuable thing we can offer to each other.
In
the essay, it is clearly explained of what kind of relationship Priscilla and
her Morrie, that the writer stated she treated her as her own sister. Her
Morrie taught her passion, patience and the tenacity to rise again from falling.
From the death of her Morrie, the writer felt loneliness because she lost an ever-reliable
friend, she was like her survival kit but she didn’t leave her. Her Morrie left
her a ton of wisdom and a great bulk if love and vivid memories with her that
the writer will kept it in her heart.
What
I like most in the work of Ms Agaton is that she used analogy to describe her
friend who passed away. She used the memoir of Albom to compare her life with
her friend who is more than a friend to her. The write also used metaphor to draw
an analogy. I was moved of the writer’s essay, especially when she talked about
the acceptance of reality that her friend had passed away and she must continue
her life and keep their memories in her heart. The overall use of the literary
devices gave the soul and emotion to the essay.
Overall,
the writer excellently nailed her essay that it will touch your soul and
realize the importance of being with someone you love or you value, just like a
friend. We can say that life is like an elevator: on your way up, sometimes,
you must stop and let some people off. The thing that you value the friendship
and the lesson that you had learned, even if the person had passed away, the
bond of friendship will not wither. There is nothing on this earth more to be
prized than a true friendship.
